Hey Substack fam, here's a little story time.
This piece was originally commissioned by a publication that shall remain unnamed. After I did all the work and submitted it on time, I had the unfortunate experience of being ghosted by the editor.
It wasn’t until I sent a firm email, copying others on the editorial team, calling out how unethical it is to make a writer do all the work and then disappear without payment, that I received a heartfelt apology and a request to publish the piece as originally planned.
By then, I decided to pull it back and share it here with all of you instead. Because my Substack fam deserves the best of my writing… 🥰 🫶
So here it goes: Girls gotta talk finance… Also known as investing, wealth, and the mistakes I’ve made along the way...
This one’s a bit outside my usual style, but a little variety never hurt anyone.
Charlie Munger, a legend in financial circles, famously said that smart men go broke three ways: liquor, ladies, and leverage.
The world of finance has been a gated community for men since day one, so naturally, no one ever bothered to come up with a version of that quote for women. If they had, what would it be? Emotional labour, skincare, and therapy?
My first real introduction to investing came in my early thirties. After years in the nonprofit world, I had landed a job at Google - and for the first time, my salary didn’t just cover rent and groceries. I actually had money left over at the end of each month. It felt surreal. What was I supposed to do with the cash slowly, but steadily piling up in my savings account?
